The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) is back on our roads. They are conducting an intensive countrywide crackdown and based on their regular updates on social media, it seems no one is being spared.

The crackdown is as a result of the growing incidents of road carnages that has reached worrying levels. The Transport CS, Kipchumba Murkomen reacted to this by instituting a number of measures among them reintroduction of NTSA on the roads.

The crackdown has seen the impounding of public and private vehicles, university and school buses, county vehicles and even diplomatic cars for noncompliance.

Some of the notable ones include public service vehicles caught carrying excess passengers, university and county cars caught without valid inspection certificates, probox and bodas found without valid certificates, pedestrians arrested for not using footbridges and a diplomatic car caught with expired insurance.

Cars found having strobe lights, light bars and sirens were also nabbed; which should come as good news to the rest of us.

The crackdown runs at night too where drunk drivers have been detained, loud and reckless matatus removed from the road and their drivers and conductors arrested.

As you drive, ensure that:

  • Your car is roadworthy, its insurance is up to date and your driver’s license is valid
  • All your lights and brakes are working
  • You are not drunk
  • You are observing all the traffic regulations such as speed limits, not overtaking along a continuous yellow line and keeping left unless overtaking. Be a safe driver.

As a pedestrian, walking on designated walkways and crossing the road on designated cross points such as footbridges is a must. Don’t be an excess passenger in a matatu.
