The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has issued an alert to motorists to be extra vigilant on the road during this rainy season. The wet conditions and slippery surfaces makes it dangerous for all road users as cars are likely to loose control and cause accidents.

The authority has urged drivers to be on the lookout for vulnerable road users such as children and to avoid driving through flooded road sections.

Here is the full statement:

The heavy rains experienced in most parts of the country creates potentially dangerous condition for road users. We urge the public to be EXTRA VIGILANT, COURTEOUS and COGNIZANT of their safety as well as looking out for vulnerable road users including children, pedestrians among others.

With increased rainfall, the Authority cautions road users that after the recent dry weather there is accumulation of dirt soil and oil deposits. We advise motorists to reduce their speed, since these deposits lead to formation of slippery surfaces making stopping more difficult thus raising the possibility of losing control.

Additionally, we have witnessed cases of motorists driving through flash floods, flooded roads, and flood riverbeds. We appeal to motorists to desist the urge while at the same time plead with passengers to take responsibility for their own safety, speak out and stop the driver.

Other cautionary measures to take include:

  • Removal of stalled vehicles as soon as possible
  • Keep safe distance from the vehicles ahead
  • To always turn on the headlights to increase visibility
  • Be aware that brakes can be affected by water. After going through water, drive slowly, this helps dry the brakes.
  • Always keep both hands on the steering wheel to enable full control
  • Check tyres and replaces them if they are worn out
  • Pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists are advised to wear bright clothing or reflector vests

As an Authority, we are committed to keeping our roads safe and, NTSA and NPS officers will be on all major highways to undertake ROAD SAFETY COMPLIANCE CHECKS to monitor speed, verify validity of NTSA documentation/licenses, undertake random drunk driving tests, crackdown on overloaded vehicles and illegal PSVs among others.

ROAD SAFETY is a SHARED RESPONSIBILITY and ALL ROAD USERS must PLAY their PART.
