The Inspector General of Police, Japhet Koome, has released a traffic advisory in anticipation of this year’s Christmas festivities. In a statement dated Wednesday, December 20, 2023, Koome urged caution among Kenyans, highlighting the expected surge in car traffic. He emphasized that ensuring road safety is a collective responsibility for all Kenyan road users.
Expressing concern over the rising cases of road crashes, IG Koome pointed out that many of these accidents are due to avoidable human factors. These include noncompliance with traffic regulations, operating unroadworthy vehicles, failure to use safety belts, speeding, driver fatigue, driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, and dangerous overtaking.
Despite these challenges, IG Koome assured the public of their safety, announcing the recall of all police officers on leave to resume duty. Additionally, he reiterated his strong stance against corruption in the police department.
