Transport Cabinet Secretary has announced the assigning of green-coloured number plates to electric cars and motorcycles in Kenya. The plates, which have been in use by county askaris, will now be used to identify EVs on our roads. This means that those cars that currently use green plates will be required to apply for new number plates.

The plates were unveiled by the CS during the unveiling of the Draft National Electric Mobility Policy at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC).
“The policy, which will guide the development of electric mobility in all transportation modes – roads, rail, air and maritime – will provide a transition framework from the internal combustion engine now in use. ” Posted Murkomen on X (formerly Twitter).
The plates are meant to raise awareness of EVs and encourage the public to consider switching to e-mobility. The CS further revealed that a proposal is being presented to Cabinet that will see the government phase out internal combustion cars for EVs. This will see the government save billions in taxpayer money on fuel and maintenance.
Glad to have today unveiled, together with my Investment, Trade and Industry colleague CS Rebecca Miano, the Draft National Electric Mobility Policy that is ready to go for public participation.
