According to Nakuru Police Commander Samuel Ndanyi, the van was carrying 15 passengers to Kisii for an event when it collided head-on with an oncoming lorry heading to Nakuru town. The van was on its climbing lane overtaking slow moving vehicles and the lorry, which had lost its brakes, was coming down the climbing lane. The impact threw the van onto a stalled trailer.

Witnesses interviewed blamed the stalled trailer for the accident saying it could have been avoided if the trailer, which has been there for the last 3 days, had been removed from the road.

A severely injured passenger, identified as a female police constable attached to Central Police Station was rushed to Nakuru Teaching and Referral Hospital for treatment.

The bodies of the deceased were taken to Nakuru Annex Funeral Home.

The driver of the lorry escaped the scene and is being sought after by the police.

The accident came hours after another accident in Kericho involving a Probox and a trailer killed 6 people.
