10 People Die in Grisly Salama Accident Along Nairobi-Mombasa highway

10 people have been confirmed dead and 11 others injured following a deadly road accident involving 5 vehicles on Monday night at Salama area on the Nairobi-Mombasa highway.

The vehicles involved were an 18-seater matatu belonging to Spanish Sacco, a 14-seater matatu belonging to Naekana Sacco, two lorries and a personal car.

The accident happened in a notorious blackspot called Mlima Kiu.

According to Mukaa Sub-County Police Commander, Barnabas Ng’eno, the accident happened at around 8:30pm when a lorry that was heading towards Mombasa collided head-on with the 18-seater Spanish Sacco matatu.

“It happened that motor vehicle registration number KBC 564M Isuzu FSR was being driven from Nairobi general direction towards Mombasa general direction and on reaching the accident site, the driver  failed to keep to his proper lane and also made a sudden right turn without due care and attention resulting in a head-on collision with motor vehicle registration number KDK 259U Toyota Hiace matatu of Spanish Sacco”

It is this accident that triggered a new wave of collisions involving other cars.

Among the dead were two girls aged between five and eight, a boy aged about five years, three female adults and four male adults. Survivors were rushed to Sultan Hamud hospital for treatment.

This accident happened on the same night an Easy Coach carrying students of Chavakali Boys overturned in Kisumu killing one.
